We audited a B2B SaaS company recently. Their brand had ranked in Google's top three for three years. The SEO team had done solid work. When we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews the same question twenty times over, 'what solution do you recommend in this space?', their name never appeared. Two smaller competitors got cited instead.
Rankings held. Traffic declined.
GEO tools emerged to address this gap. Traditional SEO tools don't measure what matters now: when users read AI-generated answers instead of clicking through search results, does your brand appear?
What GEO tools monitor
A GEO tool, or Generative Engine Optimization tool, tracks mentions of your brand across generative engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It records which sources get cited and whether mentions are positive or negative. The goal is to make your brand a cited source in AI-generated answers, beyond appearing as a link in search results.
Traditional SEO tools track keyword rankings. GEO tools track whether AI systems cite your brand. One measures ranking position. The other shows what happens when AI responds to real questions: is your brand mentioned, ignored, praised, or criticized?
8 GEO tools tested in 2026
We tested these tools across client projects using identical prompts and competitors, comparing which data matched real results. Below is their positioning breakdown.
| Tool | Core Strength | Primary Engines Monitored | Best For | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | Enterprise citation analysis, AI crawler traffic tracking | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO, Copilot | Well-funded enterprises reporting to the board | Premium Enterprise |
| Peec AI | Clear competitive comparison, team collaboration, strong value | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini | Mid-to-large European marketing teams | Mid-Market Leader |
| Otterly.ai | Easy onboarding, prompt sentiment analysis | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO | Small-to-medium business entry point | Beginner-Friendly |
| Scrunch AI | Tracks AI crawler behavior + content repair recommendations | Multi-engine + bot layer | High content volume, need to know "can AI reach you" | Technical-Focused |
| Goodie AI | Agentic, auto-generates corrected content | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini | Lean teams wanting hands-on automation | Automation-Driven |
| Semrush AI Toolkit | Unified dashboard with traditional SEO data | AI Overviews, ChatGPT | Already-heavy Semrush users | SEO Integration |

| Rankscale | Real-time prompt tracking, source page attribution | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot | Growth teams needing rapid hypothesis validation | Agile Monitoring |
Profound works for enterprises that need depth; Peec and Rankscale for teams prioritizing speed and efficiency; Otterly if you're new to GEO monitoring; Scrunch and Goodie once you've identified specific problems and need automated solutions.
Three questions to ask
The feature list can overwhelm the choice. Three factors determine whether a tool will work for you.
First, does the tool monitor engines your customers use? Usage patterns in Taiwan and Greater China differ from Western markets. Some tools handle Traditional Chinese prompts poorly and misidentify local competitors. Before you commit, test with your own language, your own industry, and your own prompts. Do not rely on English-language demos alone.
Second, does it show you what to fix? Many tools display metrics: mention rates up three percentage points, sentiment scores improved. These numbers do not indicate which pages need changes, which content gaps exist, or which schema adjustments would help. Monitoring is only the beginning. The tool becomes useful when it traces findings to specific pages and shows you exactly which articles AI systems are citing.
Third, are you buying monitoring or actual improvement? Monitoring tools report problems. They do not solve them. One client made this distinction clear: they invested in a premium dashboard and reviewed the data for six months, but nothing changed. No one translated the findings into actual content or technical work. The tool might say 'AI is not citing you.' But AI citations begin when your content is well-structured, backed by authoritative sources, and formatted for AI systems to parse.
The work begins
GEO tools measure results, but they do not create results. The most expensive option will not generate new AI mentions by itself.
We use GEO tools as a measurement layer. First, establish the baseline, how AI currently discusses you and your competitors. Then engineering and content teams restructure your brand information so AI systems can cite it. Return to the tool and verify whether mention rates improved. A green dashboard is meaningless without actual results. Measure whether AI mentions you in real conversations and brings interested customers through the door. The same principle applies to all systems: a polished demo is worthless if no one uses it.
