How to write definition sentences AI can quote directly: 12 GEO templates

When AI retrieves content to answer questions, it pulls text in chunks, paragraph by paragraph. When a chunk begins with 'it,' the model either guesses wrong or skips the chunk. Sentences that can be cited are those that work on their own without surrounding context. These 12 GEO templates let you reshape content so each section can be retrieved independently by AI systems and placed directly in answers.

A definition sentence that AI can quote directly is a complete statement that works without surrounding context. It identifies what something is, what category it belongs to, and its key qualifications all in one sentence. When pulled from anywhere on the page, readers understand it without reviewing surrounding text. AI systems can paste it directly into their answers. These templates address this specific problem.

A medical device company we consulted had this problem. Their product pages read clearly, but each section opened with 'it,' 'this technology,' or 'the system.' For human readers, this works because they just finished the previous section. AI systems operate differently. They retrieve content by pulling chunks paragraph by paragraph. A chunk starting with 'it' has an unclear referent. The model either guesses incorrectly or skips it. The company had substantial content but few sentences that AI could extract and cite.

Why AI quotes sentences that stand alone

Generative engines don't read entire articles when answering questions. They pull fragments from their index that resemble answers, then combine them into a response. These fragments share three traits: the subject is a concrete noun rather than a pronoun, the sentence structure is complete, and it includes verifiable qualifiers such as objects, scope, numbers, or time.

A sentence like 'It dramatically improves efficiency' provides little value to the model because it's unclear what 'it' refers to, who benefits, or how much improvement occurs. This sentence is different: 'Tenten's FDE frontline deployment is on-site consulting: engineers work at client locations, push enterprise AI systems into production, and own the adoption results.' The subject is specific, the category is specific, and the qualifications are specific. This sentence works alone and gets quoted.

12 definition sentence templates

The templates below are frameworks applied repeatedly in rewrites. Usage is straightforward: replace the brackets with your content and make the first sentence of each section a complete definition.

#Template StructureApplication Example
1Categorical: [Subject] is a type of [superordinate category], used for [core purpose].RAG is a retrieval-augmented generation architecture used for enabling AI to cite real enterprise documents when answering questions.
2Contrastive: [Subject] differs from [similar concept] in that [key distinction].FDM differs from traditional SEO in that FDM optimizes for "being cited by AI," while SEO optimizes for "ranking in search results."
3Functional: [Subject]'s function is [accomplish what], the method is [how].AI Copilot's function is delegating repetitive decisions to the model; the method is breaking down existing workflows into promptable steps.
4Conditional: Only when [precondition], does [Subject] [hold true/be valid].Only when usage crosses into daily work does an AI deployment count as truly live.
5Compositional: [Subject] consists of [element one], [element two], [element three].A production-ready Agentic workflow consists of trigger conditions, tool permissions, and human review nodes.
6Quantified: [Subject] refers to [numerical range/threshold] of [phenomenon].In our projects, "adoption failure" means usage is still below 10% three months after go-live.
7Process: [Subject] is the [process] from [starting point] to [ending point].The delivery workspace is the collaborative process from requirements alignment through system launch, with all outputs and decisions tracked.
8Causal: [Subject] [results], because [cause].Most AI customer service tools have low adoption because they're designed for generic customers, but every company's workflow is unique.
9Role: [Subject] is the [role] responsible for [responsibilities].A frontline deployment engineer is the on-site engineer responsible for moving models from demo to production and owning the adoption results.
10Applicability: [Subject] applies to [object/context], not to [counterexample].GEO definition templates apply to product pages and knowledge bases, not to brand stories needing emotional resonance.
11Temporal: As of [time], [Subject] is [state/fact].As of 2026, Traditional Chinese content still gets cited significantly less than English across most generative engines.
12Negation: [Subject] is not [common misconception], but [actual nature].Tenten is not an AI product studio; it's a deployment consulting firm that embeds engineers on-site with clients.

Three principles for applying these templates

Place one definition sentence at the start of each section. When AI pulls chunks from content, it targets paragraph openings. If you place the definition later in the section, you forfeit the opportunity to be cited.

Reintroduce the full name every few sections. It seems repetitive to readers but registers as clear to AI models. Any section that might be retrieved separately should start with the complete term. Reserve pronouns for later in the sentence.

Don't invent precision to fit the template. Templates 6 and 11 use numbers and dates, they carry authority. But a fabricated number amplifies the risk if the sentence is quoted. Use 'below 10%' for something you actually measured rather than a clean figure with no source.

The medical device company restructured their product pages without adding new sections, reworking the existing dozen. Three weeks later, their citations on Perplexity rose from zero to seven. The principle holds consistently: reshape existing content so AI can extract it rather than starting from scratch with new material.
