Abstract
Agentic AI systems take actions in the world autonomously: they browse the web, write and execute code, call APIs, and modify files. They introduce governance challenges that do not exist in conventional software systems or passive AI systems such as chatbots that only provide information.
The core problem is irreversibility. A poorly designed agentic system can send an email, modify a database record, or execute a financial transaction without human review. These actions may be difficult or impossible to reverse. The cost of a failed agentic action is potentially much higher than the cost of a failed query response.
This runbook describes governance controls for agentic AI: action permissions, human approval, audit records, monitoring, and recovery. Choose and test the controls required by your environment and risk assessment.
